HEX HEAD SCREWS
This includes Hex Head Cap Screws and Hex Head Bolts

Length is measured from underneath the head to the end of the thread.

Fully threaded hex head screws engage with a tapped, threaded hole all the way to the head. These will be weaker than a partially threaded hex head screw in the shear plane or side loads. These will also allow you more adjustablity.

Tap Bolt (Fully Threaded Hex Head Screw)
SAE Grade 5
SAE Grade 8

Stainless Steel Hex Head Screw
Partially threaded hex head screws have an unthreaded portion, shank or shoulder under the head for more holding power when force is applied from the side (shear). The unthreaded portion is stronger than the threaded portion of the hex head screw. Thread length varies from fully threaded for shorter lengths to 2 times the diameter plus a 1/4" for 6" in length and under and 2 times the diameter plus a 1/2" for 6" and longer.
